Chapter 12
There is no remedy for love but to love more.
~ Henry David Thoreau ~
Through the shiny window of Elite Bridal, I could see Hannah and Gloriaâbridal attendant extraordinaireâwith huge smiles on their faces. Andrew stood next to Hannah with his arm casually around her waist, and Val was sitting slouched on one of the pristine white chairs near another man I didnât know. It was probably Garrett, Andrewâs cousin and best man. Iâd been told about him and that weâd be matched up at the wedding itself, but I hadnât met him yet. Between meeting my âpartnerâ and having to try on a dress again, I wasnât sure I wanted to go in there. Last time had been brutal, and this time I hadnât been able to bring caffeinated products with me. I needed a minute to psych myself up.
âI take it Iâm not the only one who would rather be somewhere else?â a voice behind me interrupted my thoughts, and I spun to find James standing casually near, looking over my shoulder at the same scene Iâd been taking in.
That was the second time heâd sneaked up behind me in the past month. His nearness caused my pulse to pick up, and suddenly going in didnât seem like such a bad idea.
âI should stop being a pansy and just go in. It canât be as bad as Iâm building it up to be,â I stated as I stepped back from the window and turned to go in. James reached around me and grabbed the door handle to open it for me before I could to do it myself. I offered him a smile as thanks for his kindness.
âCare to place a wager on that?â he asked in a quiet voice as I walked past him into the door. I knew he was whispering to keep Hannah from hearing, but his soft voice close to my ear caused a tingle to dance down my spine.
âNope. Not even a little one,â I retorted over my shoulder. âYou know I always lose.â
Hannah heard us come in and clapped her hands together before James could reply. She hurried over to give both of us hugs and then turned back to the group.
âTheyâre here. Letâs get started! Andrew, Garrett, and James, you can go over there with Elaine.â She pointed to a pretty blonde woman waiting near a set of curtains. âOh, wait, you havenât all met Garrett. Let me introduce you.â Hannah grabbed both James and me by the arms and steered us over to where the man Iâd seen was standing up out of his chair.
Garrett turned to face us, and I was immediately struck by how handsome he was. He was of average height, and it was obvious he was into physical fitness. His dark blond hair was spiky, and his bright eyes radiated good humor. When he smiled at us, I felt a pleasant tingle of awareness. Suddenly I was just fine with being partners for the wedding.
He stepped forward and held out his hand to me first, eyes dancing.
