Chapter 12

There is no remedy for love but to love more.

~ Henry David Thoreau ~

Through the shiny window of Elite Bridal, I could see Hannah and Gloria—bridal attendant extraordinaire—with huge smiles on their faces. Andrew stood next to Hannah with his arm casually around her waist, and Val was sitting slouched on one of the pristine white chairs near another man I didn’t know. It was probably Garrett, Andrew’s cousin and best man. I’d been told about him and that we’d be matched up at the wedding itself, but I hadn’t met him yet. Between meeting my “partner” and having to try on a dress again, I wasn’t sure I wanted to go in there. Last time had been brutal, and this time I hadn’t been able to bring caffeinated products with me. I needed a minute to psych myself up.

“I take it I’m not the only one who would rather be somewhere else?” a voice behind me interrupted my thoughts, and I spun to find James standing casually near, looking over my shoulder at the same scene I’d been taking in.

That was the second time he’d sneaked up behind me in the past month. His nearness caused my pulse to pick up, and suddenly going in didn’t seem like such a bad idea.

“I should stop being a pansy and just go in. It can’t be as bad as I’m building it up to be,” I stated as I stepped back from the window and turned to go in. James reached around me and grabbed the door handle to open it for me before I could to do it myself. I offered him a smile as thanks for his kindness.

“Care to place a wager on that?” he asked in a quiet voice as I walked past him into the door. I knew he was whispering to keep Hannah from hearing, but his soft voice close to my ear caused a tingle to dance down my spine.

“Nope. Not even a little one,” I retorted over my shoulder. “You know I always lose.”

Hannah heard us come in and clapped her hands together before James could reply. She hurried over to give both of us hugs and then turned back to the group.

“They’re here. Let’s get started! Andrew, Garrett, and James, you can go over there with Elaine.” She pointed to a pretty blonde woman waiting near a set of curtains. “Oh, wait, you haven’t all met Garrett. Let me introduce you.” Hannah grabbed both James and me by the arms and steered us over to where the man I’d seen was standing up out of his chair.

Garrett turned to face us, and I was immediately struck by how handsome he was. He was of average height, and it was obvious he was into physical fitness. His dark blond hair was spiky, and his bright eyes radiated good humor. When he smiled at us, I felt a pleasant tingle of awareness. Suddenly I was just fine with being partners for the wedding.

He stepped forward and held out his hand to me first, eyes dancing.
